Job Fairs

Finding a job can be quite a challenge. Luckily, many options are available to you. While the Internet is a top source for a job search these days, you can also take routes that are more traditional, like job fairs. If you are thinking about going to a job fair, make sure you are prepared as they can be fast-paced. There are certain steps you should take before, during, and after the event.

Do your research before going to a job fair. Find out which companies would be at the event. You can get this information from the event’s website or advertisements. You will at least find a partial list. Review this list and do research on the companies. This is particularly important when it comes to unfamiliar company names. Make sure that unfamiliarity does not deter you from attending the fair, as it may cost you a job. Visit the websites of the companies. Learn where they are located and decide if a commute would be logical for you, should you get a job. Search for the company names on a search engine and read information and news about them. Further, research the financial outlook of public companies that may interest you on the list. Also, search the Internet for open positions the company has.

You should also work on preparing yourself for the job fair. It is very important that you look professional. Dress as you would to a job interview. Your style should be business. Wear a suit in a dark, neutral color like navy blue or gray. Make sure your shoes are clean and shiny. Since you will be doing some walking, make sure that your shoes are comfortable for it. These fairs are usually held in large halls and you will be on your feet a lot. Carry a simple portfolio containing copies of your resume, a pad and pen, and business cards. Do not forget to take breath mints and tissues with you, just in case you need them. You will be receiving many business cards during the rounds, so make sure you can hold and store them with you. Have a smile on your face and be confident. Make sure your handshake is firm.

When you enter the site, take a good look. Scope out the place and walk around. Take note of the company booths. Remember that time is limited. Therefore, you should not spend too much time at a booth that does not really interest you. Use your time wisely. Give more time to companies that interest you. Pick up brochures of companies, take business cards, drop you resumes, and be open to people who approach you. You never know what may come your way. New jobs come from the most unexpected places sometimes. Engage representatives in conversations. Ask a couple of questions and make sure that you make eye contact with them during your chat. Do not keep them occupied for too long. Be courteous and enthusiastic.

After the job fair, you still have work to do. This is when you should send brief thank you notes to the representatives you have met. In the notes, remind them where and when you met them. Also let them know that you are interested in working at their company.
