If you are looking for a job, you need to make sure that your resume stands out. Employers usually receive hundreds of resumes for each open position. Only a few resumes actually stand out. To ensure that your resume is among the ones that catch their eyes, follow these tips on creating a fabulous resume.
- Mind the format. Make sure that your resume, as a whole, impresses the employer. Therefore, it should have plenty of white, open space and a clear font. It should be east to skim. While you might usually send in a resume in electronic format, when you go to a job interview or are requested to mail in a resume, make sure that it is printed on high-quality resume paper.
- Check your spelling and grammar. Your resume makes a first impression when you are looking for a job. Therefore, make sure that it is void of spelling and grammatical mistakes. Remember that employers receive a great quantity of resumes. One free of errors is one that would catch their attention. Mistakes make them think twice. They are not attractive and show lack of care and attention.
- Include an objective. It is your chance to connect your experience, traits, skills, and job requirements with what the employer needs. Review the job ad carefully and focus on what the employer needs. Be as specific as you can be while showing that you possess what is needed.
- Include a qualifications section. This section is usually a series of bulleted points that highlight significant career experiences, skills, and accomplishments from your professional history. Make sure what you emphasize here related to the open position.
- Specify complete information for each position. Every job you include in your resume should be complete with all the necessary information, like the company name, dates of employment, and your position. Your failure to provide all the necessary information may show that you are not being forthright about something. Do not make the employer guess or try to read between the lines. Be very clear and direct.
- Include a list of key achievements/contributions. If you really want to impress a prospective employer, include your main achievements during each position you have filled. Be very specific and mention ways you improved the workflow, won awards, and more. Use percentage figures, if applicable.
- Mention your education. Some people tend to focus on their work history and fail to mention anything about their education. Employers do not appreciate having to guess about someone’s educational background. Be sure to include the section on education.
- Mention recognition and awards. You may be debating whether you should include the awards you have garnered throughout the years on your resume. The answer is yes. This kind of information makes you stick out among job seekers. Let them know what you have accomplished!
- Include your personal accomplishments. Dedicate a section to listing your accomplishments when it comes to published works, volunteerism, sports participation, positions in community and academic organizations, and more.
